Faculty of Economics

Research and Educational Objectives

To provide the Hokkaido region with promising graduates who studied the laws of economics and society.

The faculty of economics, founded in 1952 or Showa 27th, with the establishment of Hokkai Gakuen University, is the first independent four-year department of economics in Hokkaido Prefecture. The educational goal of the university is to foster students with human resources who can contribute to the development of Hokkaido, based on a frontier spirit. This goal was overlapped with the philosophy of our university's foundation, which has succeeded to date. In the new millennium, however, global and regional circumstances have drastically changed and become more complicated.

The faculty of economics addresses this challenge with the three pillars of economics - theory, history, and policy - by aiming to develop students who recognize and can cope with various aspects of social issues, environmental problems, and regional/international disparities. Our faculty's fundamental philosophy that strives for contributions to the real world through economic theories is common in our two departments of economics and regional economics, as their educational system and contents are related closely with each other.

Department of Economics

Curriculum
To learn economics elaborately with three courses: "Economic/Fiscal Policies", "Public Policies", and "Global Economy"
It is an urgent and serious challenge to understand and solve a range of problems surrounding our society, such as economic/financial crises, environmental/resource problems, unstable employment and poverty, ongoing recessions, and the overseas relocation of domestic industries. For this challenge, we need to have an understanding about the economy which is basic to our social structure, and to learn about policies that guard against such social problems. Therefore, the department of economics aims to have students learn economic theories and policies elaborately by setting up an economic/fiscal policies course with a focus on economic issues and public finance, a public policies course to deal with social security, family issues, and labor/employment problems, and a global economy course targeting economic issues around the world.

Department of Regional Economics

Curriculum
To look at the world from the perspective of the local economy with three courses: "Regional Economy/Industry", "Community Design", and "East Asian Economy"
Social and economic problems in modern times appear collectively in regions where people live and make products. Thus, it is strongly required to apply economic theories and policies to a variety of real regional problems. For this requirement, first of all, we need to feel the texture of our region where people interact, and then to be capable of seeing the possibility of its development, which enables us to envision our regional development in the global economy. Therefore, the department of regional economics aims to foster students who can envision regional development for the future by setting up a regional economy/industry course that focusses on the system and structure of the regional economy, a community design course to deliberate on the roles of local residents/government and concepts of working cooperatively, and an East Asian economy course to envision the future of Hokkaido through exchanges with neighboring countries.
